Hocus Pocus Filming Locations in Salem, MA Destination Salem

Located in the heart of the McIntyre Historic District, the Ropes Mansion, which is featured as Allison's house, is one of Salem's most iconic buildings. The home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for housing Nathaniel Ropes, a famous merchant and attorney in the 1700s. Out back, the mansion boasts a gorgeous garden and greenhouse that is also welcome to visitors. In real life, the building was formerly Phillips Elementary School on South Washington Square in Salem. It was no longer being used at the time of filming, so it was easy for them to shoot scenes there.

Additionally, there will be a special screening of the movie's sequel. In "Hocus Pocus," there's a memorable scene of the Sanderson sisters riding their brooms in the night sky that I envisioned as I stood looking at the harbor. Salem Harbor is across the street from the house, which makes for a pretty great view if you're standing right in front of it, as I was. Just to the right side of the house, there was a pebbled path that led to the garden. The movie starts off with Max developing a crush on Allison during a class conversation about Salem, the Sanderson sisters, and the city's Halloween traditions. It wasn't open to the public when I visited, possibly because of the coronavirus pandemic, but TripAdvisor reviews suggest you can usually take a donation-based self-guided tour.

“Hocus Pocus:” Filming Locations for a Halloween Classic

The other classic party scene in the film was actually filmed just a few blocks away at Old Town Hall in Derby Square. Famous in the film for Bette Midler’s rendition of “Put a Spell on You,” the building today is open to the public, and hosts the Salem Museum and performances of Cry Innocent. Phillips Elementary School, which served as John Bailey High School in Hocus Pocus, is no longer in use.

Pioneer Village

Another house was used was 6546 Friends Ave, located just two houses down from the house above. This house was only seen briefly in a scene where kids were trick-or-treating. If you remember the scene where the Sanderson sisters find themselves in the home of their “master” aka Satan (and his not so happy wife), that house is located at 6536 Friends Ave, Whittier, CA 90601. There are also a couple of other tombstones you can find that were used in individual scenes, like when Max was riding his bike into the cemetery.

All of the must-visit filming locations for "Hocus Pocus" in Salem and Marblehead.

The garden is open to the public all year long, and they offer tours on specific dates. Although the exterior scenes were shot here and the interior scenes were shot in California, the inside of the house is definitely worth seeing. During the month of October, the Old Town Hall houses the Salem Museum, a small museum dedicated to the history of Salem and just what the hell witches have to do with it all. It’s a worthwhile stop and great introduction to the city at just $3 admission.

I also didn't get a chance to visit the pioneer village where Thackery Binx lived with his family.

Max and Dani’s House is also located extremely close to Pioneer Village so you can knock those two out at the same time. Eventually, efforts were made to beautify the area and the wrought iron fence around the Common was put up in 1850. Today, this is one of the popular places in Salem for strolling around and for local events. However, this one is tough because it’s possible they framed the shot with a nice zoom lens and I’m pretty sure the color change trees were fake, which kind of throws off your alignment.

The best routes for exploring Hocus Pocus locations in Salem

One of Salem’s most famous Hocus Pocus filming locations is Ropes Mansion. Represented as Allison’s house in the movie, this Colonial Revival mansion was used for the exterior shots and many scenes like the trick or treating scene. Known as America's "first living history museum," Pioneer Village is home to Thackary Binx — aka everyone's favorite black cat — and all exterior shots of the Sanderson sisters' ominous cottage.

Seen many times during the movie and one of the most recognizable of the Hocus Pocus filming locations is Max and Dani’s house. Just like in the early 1990s, this house is just a regular ol’ house. Owned by people who drive a Jeep Wrangler and a small sedan (and apparently never move their cars). The Sanderson's sisters' cottage is located in Salem Pioneer Village, a 10-minute drive from downtown Salem. Built in 1930, the first living history museum in the U.S. is home to dugouts, wigwams, thatched roof cottages, medicinal gardens, and a blacksmith shop.

Phillips Elementary School on Salem Common / Max & Allison’s School

When you get there, you will see Fountain Park on one side and then some steps taking you to the cemetery on the other side. It’s a short uphill walk and to find the specific spot that was used in the film. The Phillips Elementary school and Salem Common film site are located in virtually the same spot so you should be able to knock out two birds with one stone.

Of course, you can still stroll the streets and pose for pictures outside. But it turns out, director Kenny Ortega also took a different route by heading to the exact New England location where the story is set. If you’re interested in taking a mini-tour through where Hocus Pocus was filmed 29 years ago, then you’ve come to the right spooky place.

Although the house is privately owned, hardcore fans have been known to take a photo or two in front of the boo-tiful abode. Since Salem’s Pioneer Village is a museum, visitors are encouraged to explore. The much-anticipated sequel to the popular 1993 film has us eagerly embracing our inner witch vibes. Please check with individual businesses to confirm hours before visiting, and note that Max and Dani’s house is not accessible.

In the original Hocus Pocus film, Allison’s house takes center stage. And you’ll be happy to learn it’s not a fake movie setting but rather a real house that’s located at 318 Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts. Max’s movie bedroom was the envy of many a viewer, especially because of its distinctive crow’s nest lookout at the top of the house. Unlike most of the buildings on this list, the house remains a private residence, and is closed to the public.

Only the exterior was used in the movie and the garden is open to the public 365 days a year, from dawn to dusk, at no charge (dogs are welcome). Not far from the Old Burial Hill Cemetery—just after you cross into Salem proper—is Max and Dani's house. Located at 10 Ocean Avenue, the house is instantly recognizable by its cupola and looks pretty much exactly the same today as it did in the movie. It's in a good location to stop and take a quick photo, and you likely won’t be the only fans doing so.

When you visit Salem Pioneer Village, you’ll be able to learn more about 17th-century life in Salem. Hocus Pocus fanatics will recognize Salem's Old Town Hall from the infamous party scene where Bette Midler performed "I Put a Spell on You" to distract the townspeople from Max's witchy allegations. Enjoy a guided walking tour to hear more about the history of this Salem treasure.

As for Max’s house where he and Allison foolishly explored the Sanderson sisters’ spell book, that home is actually located at 4 Ocean Avenue, also in Salem. In celebration, we’re dishing out the details of the Hocus Pocus houses — from their locations to their visitation policies. Continue reading all about the wonderfully witchy homes of Hocus Pocus. Max gets a rude welcome to Salem (and loses his shoes in the process) when he’s accosted by school bullies Ernie and Jay while crossing through a graveyard on his way home from school.
